Maya Angelou has always been one of my favorite poets. I was
introduced to her my first year of high school with 'I Know Why The Caged Bird
Sing.' As a college student sometimes you become overwhelmed with
work and get ready to give up. Other times, some go into the field just because
they know it would make money. The reality of the situation is 'Are you HAPPY
at the end of these 4 years?' After you've spent a fortune on a diploma you
leave and realize, 'Oh Mannnnn I've Made A Terrible Choice. I'm Really Not
Happy in this position.'
Surfing through the internet I stumbled
upon one of Ms. Angelou's quotes: "You
can only become truly accomplished at something you love. DON'T make MONEY your GOAL.
Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people
can't take their eyes of you."
From this quote I gathered many thoughts.
My first thought was as I mentioned before, college students going into fields
because of the money, but aren't happy with it. I've come to the realization
that money makes the world go around, but sometimes it's not always about where
the money is. I remember back in high school, I had a conversation with a
fellow classmate. This classmate talked about going into a particular field
because the schooling would not be as long as other degrees. And also, because
he felt that he'd make money after the completion. While ensuring that after
college you're able to pay back your many loans with the degree that you've
obtained, sometimes it's not always the best option.
You cannot spend the remainder of your
life being a teacher when you're not passionate about teaching. Instead follow
your dreams and passions. If you're good at speaking then become a journalist
or even an author. If you're good at a sport pursue that passion you may never
know where it will take you. I understand the burden of graduating from college
and can't find the decent job to go with your degree. This shouldn't discourage
you, instead it should motivate you to fight and try harder.
In the end, we are all authors of our
lives. We hold the pen and write our life stories everyday. We all want to be
great in life; and we all have big dreams and goals to fulfill; but we can't do
it without being passionate about something. Stop listening to that person that
tells you what they think you should do. Do what's best for you. At the end of
the day we are all fighting to have our names remembered in history for
positive things.
